Bashfield emphasised the crucial role of submarine cables, which handle nearly 99% of global internet traffic and are essential to digital communication.

“Submarine cable networks form the backbone of modern digital information flows,” he added.

“As these networks expand, the need to protect and enhance their resilience has become even more urgent.”

This project was selected in round four of DFAT’s AICCTP funding and underscores Australia and India’s shared dedication to cybersecurity and critical technology.

The initiative will produce policy-focused publications and culminate in a “1.5 Track Dialogue” in Perth in 2025, gathering leaders from government, industry, and academia to strengthen digital infrastructure resilience.

Four suspects arrested in connection with Canberra Hindu temples break-ins and vandalism https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/four-suspects-arrested-in-connection-with-canberra-hindu-temples-break-ins-and-vandalism/ Mon, 04 Nov 2024 08:25:59 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=74420 NSW Police have arrested four suspects in connection with a series of temple break-ins that left Canberra’s Hindu community reeling.

The arrests were made in Yass, a town on the periphery of the Southern Tablelands and South West Slopes of New South Wales, after the suspects were stopped by officers; however, no charges have yet been laid by ACT Policing following the incidents.

ACT Police said in an email statement to The Australia Today:

The community was stunned on 26 October 2024, as two Hindu temples in Canberra were desecrated in a brazen daylight crime spree.

CCTV footage from the Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre in Florey captured four masked individuals in a black Honda van ramming through the temple’s front door around 1:30 pm.

Once inside, the perpetrators stole three small donation boxes and a massive 200 kg box containing thousands of dollars. Using a wheelbarrow found on-site, they loaded the heavy box into their van and fled, all in just 15 minutes.

“We are deeply saddened and disturbed by this senseless act,” Temple Vice President Shree Tarun Agasti told The Australia Today.

“This vandalism affects not only our community but challenges the values of respect and inclusivity in Canberra.”

Shortly after, the same individuals allegedly targeted the Vishnu Shiva Temple, arriving at 2 pm when the temple was closed for a lunch break.

Armed with a crowbar, they forced their way inside, vandalising the reception area and stealing cash-filled safes.

Their assault on the temple grew even more destructive as they ripped out concrete-embedded donation boxes with sledgehammers, violated sacred areas, and shattered the revered Shiva Lingam, a sacred symbol of Lord Shiva.

Temple President Thamo Sritharan described the community’s distress, noting,

“It’s heartbreaking to witness such desecration of our place of worship. Targeting temples in this way is unacceptable.”

He urged the newly elected government to take swift action to protect Canberra’s Hindu community from further attacks.

Dr Jaishankar Highlights Expanding India-Australia Relations, Inaugurates New Consulate in Brisbane https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/dr-jaishankar-highlights-expanding-india-australia-relations-inaugurates-new-consulate-in-brisbane/ Mon, 04 Nov 2024 03:49:49 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=74357 India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar expressed his delight in interacting with the Indian-diaspora in Brisbane during his visit to Australia, marking a significant step in fostering ties between the two nations.

“The opening of India’s 4th consulate in Australia is a step forward in our friendship,” said Jaishankar in a post on X, following his address to the Indian diaspora.

The new consulate in Brisbane, which was formally inaugurated by Dr Jaishankar, aims to strengthen India’s ties with Queensland, promote trade, foster educational linkages, and serve the Indian diaspora in the region.

“Delighted to formally inaugurate new Consulate General of India in Brisbane today. It will contribute to strengthening India’s ties with Queensland state, promoting trade, fostering educational linkages and serving the diaspora,” Jaishankar remarked.

He also extended his gratitude to H.E Dr. Jeannette Young, Governor of Queensland, and Ministers Ros Bates and Fiona Simpson for joining the inauguration ceremony, highlighting the support from Australian leadership in enhancing India-Australia relations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the establishment of this new consulate during his visit to Australia in May 2023. The new consulate in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, fulfills a long-standing request from the Indian diaspora and highlights the growing relationship between Queensland and India, both in trade and community growth.

Currently, India maintains a High Commission in Canberra and has consulates in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, along with an honorary consulate in Brisbane. Queensland is home to a rapidly growing Indian community, and the upcoming consulate is expected to further support this vibrant group.

While addressing members of the Indian diaspora at the University of Queensland in Brisbane on Sunday, Jaishankar noted the presence of around 125,000 individuals of Indian origin in Queensland. This underscores the significance of the community in strengthening the ties between the two nations.

“About 125,000 people of Indian origin live here. I’m told roughly 15,000-16,000 students are living in this state. What impressed me was that 75 per cent of Australia’s exports to India come from this state.”

“In the last 10 years, we should not treat it as an achievement but as a glimpse of what is possible. What we have done is put in place a framework in which this relationship will grow and foster in the times to come. Today, as India looks out at the world and say which are our really crucial foreign policy and platforms,” said Jaishankar.

He highlighted that 75 per cent of Australia’s exports to India originate from Queensland, urging stakeholders not to see recent successes as mere milestones but rather as indicators of future potential. He elaborated on the strategic framework that has been set in place to strengthen bilateral relations, stating that India is building an environment in which the partnership will grow in the coming years.

Jaishankar also touched on educational collaborations between the two countries, pointing out the recent visit of India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to Australia.

“We have just had the visit of our Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to Australia and I do believe that education and research will play a disproportionate role in the knowledge economy and the era of AI,” he said.

This highlights the significant role education will play in deepening connections between the two nations, particularly in the context of a growing knowledge economy.

He went on to discuss the strong India-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership, emphasising the leadership and vision of both countries in energising bilateral ties and expanding areas of cooperation.

Jaishankar’s visit to Australia, which spans five days, includes multiple engagements. While in Brisbane, he is scheduled to inaugurate India’s 4th consulate in Australia and will also co-chair the 15th Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue (FMFD) with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in Canberra.

The External Affairs Minister will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural session of the 2nd Raisina Down Under conference, to be held at the Australian Parliament House. In addition to formal meetings, Jaishankar is set to engage with Australian leaders, parliamentarians, the business community, members of the Indian diaspora, as well as media representatives and think tanks.

Following his visit to Australia, Jaishankar will travel to Singapore on November 8, 2024, where he will attend the 8th Roundtable of ASEAN – India Network of Think Tanks. He is also scheduled to meet with Singaporean leadership to review and discuss the strong partnership between India and Singapore, exploring opportunities to enhance bilateral ties further.

Two Hindu Temples Vandalised: Thugs Steal Donations and Break Sacred Shiva Lingam https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/two-hindu-temples-vandalised-thugs-steal-donations-and-break-sacred-shiva-lingam/ Mon, 28 Oct 2024 01:55:29 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=73693 On a day when most Hindus in Canberra were preparing to attend the annual Diwali Mela at Albert Holt, an appalling crime unfolded, targeting two Hindu temples in the capital city. The brazen act left the community shaken, as masked men broke into the temples, causing significant damage and stealing valuable donations.

At approximately 1:30 pm, four masked individuals arrived in a black Honda van and crashed into the front door of the Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre in Florey, ACT Canberra.

The footage, recorded by CCTV cameras, captured the perpetrators swiftly moving through the temple premises. They stole three small donation boxes along with a massive 200 kg donation box containing several thousand dollars.

In a shocking display of audacity, the group even used a wheelbarrow found in the temple shed to transport the large donation box to their van. The entire heist lasted only about 15 minutes.

Temple Vice President Shree Tarun Agasti told The Australia Today, “We are deeply saddened and disturbed by the recent act of vandalism and theft that occurred at our temple over the weekend.”

“This senseless act of disrespect towards our place of worship and our community is disheartening. We want to assure our community that we are working closely with the local authorities to investigate this incident and bring those responsible to justice.”

“We urge anyone with information to come forward and assist the authorities in their investigation. This act of vandalism not only affects our Hindu community but also undermines the values of respect, tolerance, and inclusivity that our diverse Canberra community holds dear.”

“We believe that every individual, regardless of their faith or background, has the right to practice their religion freely and without fear. We call upon the entire Canberra community to stand united against such acts of hatred and intolerance.”

“By working together, we can create a safer and more harmonious society for all. We remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering peace, understanding, and interfaith dialogue. We invite everyone to join us in promoting unity and respect for all faiths. We thank the community for their outpouring of support and solidarity during this difficult time.”

However, the thugs didn’t stop at this temple. Immediately after, they drove to the Vishnu Shiva Temple, arriving at 2 pm, roughly an hour after the temple had closed at 1 pm.

Temple President Thamo Sritharan informed The Australia Today that the break-in took place while the caretaker and the priest were away for their lunch break. Using a crowbar, the vandals forced their way through the main door and proceeded to vandalise the reception area. They took two safes from the area, both containing cash.

The heist grew more destructive as the criminals targeted the Hundis, the donation boxes embedded in concrete. These donation boxes were forcefully removed using sledgehammers.

The vandals also entered the sanctum where the deities are housed, trampling upon sacred areas and vandalising the Vasant Mandapan, a structure used for religious ceremonies. They went on to damage cupboards containing sacred clothing for the deities, causing further devastation.

The most egregious act was the breaking of the Shiva Lingam, a revered symbol of Lord Shiva. The senseless destruction of this sacred object has left the community deeply hurt and shaken.

Temple President Thamo Sritharan, who was busy coordinating preparations for the Diwali Mela, was informed of the incident by the temple priest around 3 pm when he returned from his break.

The police were immediately called to both temples and have since begun their inquiries. CCTV footage showed the black Honda van had a Victorian number plate, but it is yet to be determined if the van or number plate was stolen.

Speaking to The Australia Today, President Sritharan expressed the community’s anguish: “It’s very disheartening to see a break-in of this nature that disturbs the Hindu community. Targeting a place of worship is unacceptable. We need protection to ensure this doesn’t happen again, to strengthen the values of harmony and peace within the ACT community.”

He also urged the newly elected government to provide greater support and ensure the protection of temples and the Hindu community:

“I would like to urge the newly elected government to provide the support needed to ensure the protection of our temples and community.”

The attack on the temples came as the Hindu community in Canberra was preparing for one of their most significant festivals, making the incident even more painful. The community hopes for swift action by authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent such acts of violence in the future.

B-Town Wives Celebrate Karwa Chauth with Love, Traditions, and Plenty of Glamour https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/b-town-wives-celebrate-karwa-chauth-with-love-traditions-and-plenty-of-glamour/ Mon, 21 Oct 2024 03:41:43 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=73038 Bollywood’s leading ladies turned Karwa Chauth into a dazzling affair this year, sharing their joy, love, and cherished traditions on social media. From stunning traditional outfits to heartfelt messages, the stars lit up the festival and brought a little Bollywood magic to the occasion.

Katrina Kaif stole the show, draped in a beautiful baby pink and golden saree, looking every bit the radiant newlywed as she proudly flaunted her sindoor. The actress shared a series of pictures, including a touching moment with Vicky Kaushal’s mother, taking her blessings, and a sweet family shot with Vicky and his parents. Fans couldn’t help but gush over the love-filled photos, as Katrina posed with grace and charm, her happiness shining through in every frame.

Meanwhile, Kriti Kharbanda was all smiles celebrating her first Karwa Chauth as a newlywed, alongside her husband Pulkit Samrat. Dressed in a stunning golden saree, Kriti glowed with joy, while Pulkit kept it classic in a white kurta.

In a heartwarming note, Kriti reminisced about her childhood memories of watching her mother observe the festival and dreaming of the day when she would follow the same tradition. “The 10-year-old me is shy and blushing!” she wrote, adding that being married to the right person had made all her dreams come true. Pulkit, of course, was the “cherry on top.”

Love was in the air for Rakul Preet and Jackky Bhagnani too, as the couple donned matching red outfits for the occasion. Rakul’s romantic caption, “My sun, moon, universe, my everything,” left fans swooning. The couple’s picture-perfect chemistry and coordinating attire added a delightful touch to the celebrations.

Raghav Chadha and Parineeti Chopra also made headlines, as they shared glimpses of their first Karwa Chauth together. In one heartfelt photo, Raghav was seen helping Parineeti break her fast, while his sweet words praised her dedication. “You’ve put so much love and dedication into this day from sunrise to moonrise… Happy Karwa Chauth, my darling Paru!” he wrote. The couple’s adorable moments instantly became a fan favourite, with Parineeti’s grace and Raghav’s admiration for her stealing the show.

Mira Rajput kept things cozy, sharing a sweet selfie with husband Shahid Kapoor and calling him her “sun and moon.” The couple, known for their loving social media exchanges, kept the tradition alive with simplicity and warmth.

The festivities wouldn’t be complete without Mouni Roy, who shared a series of breathtaking photos with husband Suraj Nambiar. Dressed in a stunning pink ensemble, Mouni looked like a vision as she celebrated the special day. The couple’s joy was palpable as they embraced the festival, with Mouni capturing every moment to share with her fans.

Karwa Chauth, a festival celebrated by Hindu married women, sees wives observing a strict ‘nirjala’ fast, without food or water, from sunrise until the moon rises. The festival symbolizes love, dedication, and the hope for a long, healthy life for their husbands. And this year, Bollywood’s beauties didn’t just celebrate—they set major #CoupleGoals while doing it.

With their heartfelt messages and dazzling outfits, the B-town wives showed that even as stars, they cherish age-old traditions and celebrate love in the most beautiful ways. It was a day filled with glam, devotion and a little bit of Bollywood magic.

New Zealand Clinch Maiden Women’s T20 World Cup Title with Victory Over South Africa https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/new-zealand-clinch-maiden-womens-t20-world-cup-title-with-victory-over-south-africa/ Mon, 21 Oct 2024 02:16:39 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=73013 Amelia Kerr delivered a stunning all-round performance to help New Zealand secure their first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup title, defeating South Africa by 32 runs in a dramatic final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Kerr top-scored for the White Ferns with a crucial 43 runs, followed by an impressive bowling spell of 3/24, to seal a historic win for her team.

Brief Scores:
New Zealand: 158/5 (Amelia Kerr 43, Brooke Halliday 38, Suzie Bates 32; Nonkululeko Mlaba 2/31)
South Africa: 126/9 (Laura Wolvaardt 33, Tazmin Brits 17, Chloe Tryon 14; Amelia Kerr 3/24)

After winning the toss, South Africa’s captain Laura Wolvaardt opted to field first. New Zealand capitalized on the opportunity to set a competitive target, posting 158/5 in their allotted 20 overs. The Kiwis got off to a steady start, led by veteran opener Suzie Bates, who scored 32 runs and became the most capped player in the history of Women’s Internationals with her appearance in the final.

Kerr Anchors New Zealand’s Innings

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, New Zealand’s middle order held firm, with Kerr anchoring the innings and Brooke Halliday contributing a valuable 38 off 28 balls. The duo’s 57-run partnership kept the scoreboard ticking and positioned New Zealand for a strong finish.

A late cameo from Maddy Green (12* off 6) pushed the total to 158/5, with the Kiwis scoring 48 runs in the last five overs. Nonkululeko Mlaba was the standout bowler for South Africa, claiming 2/31, including the crucial wicket of Kerr, who fell just short of a half-century.

South Africa’s Chase Falls Short

Chasing 159 for victory, South Africa started positively, with Laura Wolvaardt (33) and Tazmin Brits (17) laying a solid foundation. However, Kerr turned the game on its head with a double-wicket over that saw the dismissal of Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch (9), leaving the Proteas struggling to keep up with the required run rate.

Rosemary Mair supported Kerr’s efforts with figures of 3/25, as South Africa’s middle order crumbled under pressure. The wickets continued to tumble, and despite a brief fightback from Chloe Tryon (14), the Proteas could only muster 126/9 by the end of their innings.

The win marked a significant milestone for New Zealand, who had never previously won the Women’s T20 World Cup. The triumph was especially sweet, given that the White Ferns had narrowly missed out on the title in earlier editions.

The victory not only secured the Kiwis’ first T20 World Cup but also highlighted Amelia Kerr’s all-round brilliance, as she played a pivotal role in both batting and bowling to lead her team to glory.

Jocelyn Bartram Leads Pack of Five Australians snapped up at Women’s Hockey India League Auction https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/jocelyn-bartram-leads-pack-of-five-australians-snapped-up-at-womens-hockey-india-league-auction/ Wed, 16 Oct 2024 06:37:58 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=72703 Australian hockey goalkeeper Jocelyn Bartram became the first international player picked up at the inaugural Women’s Hockey India League (HIL) auction, fetching 15 lakhs (AUD 26,605) after a bidding war.

Hockeyroos’ Bartram, whose outstanding 2024 included an Olympic debut and her 100th Test cap, was secured by the Odisha Warriors, outbidding Glenn Turner’s Bengal Tigers for the prized signing.

“I wasn’t watching originally, but a few of the girls were tuning in and told me I was up, so I quickly jumped online to watch,” Bartram shared.

“I’d been extremely nervous all morning, and to be picked up by Odisha was an amazing feeling. I’ve always wanted to experience hockey in an overseas league, and this will be amazing.”

Australian Players in Demand

Bartram led the charge for Australian talent at the one-day auction, which featured just four women’s teams and saw over 250 players go under the hammer for the five-week league, set to run from December 28 to February 1.

The Odisha Warriors continued their shopping spree by acquiring two more Hockeyroos stars, securing 2024 FIH Rising Star finalist Claire Colwill and two-time Olympian Kaitlin Nobbs for 13 lakhs (AUD 23,058) each.

The Warriors’ roster was further bolstered with the addition of Dutch superstar Yibbi Jansen, the highest-paid international player at the auction, who sold for 29 lakhs (AUD 51,438). Fresh off winning Olympic gold in Paris, Jansen is expected to bring both experience and firepower to the Odisha side.

“Heading to the Odisha Warriors with Kaitlin and Claire will be great,” said Bartram.

“Having that familiarity around will be comforting in a new environment, and mixing it with Yibbi, Frekke from Holland, and the Indian girls seems like a good mix for the competition.”

Penny Squibb and Miri Maroney Join the League

Hockeyroos defender Penny Squibb, who made a successful comeback from injury to debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was snapped up by Soorma Hockey Club for 6.6 lakhs (AUD 11,706).

Meanwhile, NSW Pride striker Miri Maroney, 22, was signed by the Delhi SG Pipers for 2 lakhs (AUD 3,547), marking a major career step as she extends her hockey season in India.

The inaugural auction saw five Australians secured by the four participating teams, underscoring the strong demand for Australian talent. The competition, which will expand to six teams next season, runs alongside the eight-team men’s HIL, which has been revived after a seven-year hiatus.

A Year to Remember for Bartram

The Odisha Warriors’ successful bid capped a remarkable year for Bartram. After making her 100th appearance for the Hockeyroos at the Perth International Festival of Hockey in April, she starred at the Paris Olympics, where the Hockeyroos’ campaign ended with a controversial quarter-final loss to China. Now, the 29-year-old goalkeeper is set to showcase her skills in one of the world’s premier hockey leagues.

“2024 definitely has been a wonderful year, and this opportunity just adds to it,” Bartram reflected.

“It’s probably an equal career high with 2022, with our success at the World Cup and Commonwealth Games.”

India’s Udita Duhan Tops Auction, Yibbi Jansen Leads International Bids

The auction’s top spot went to Indian defender Udita Duhan, who was picked up by the Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers for 32 lakhs (AUD 56,884). Duhan was followed by Yibbi Jansen, who secured the highest international price. Over 250 Indian players and 70 internationals were up for grabs, making the competition for slots fierce.

While the event saw significant bidding for top players, some big names, including Hockeyroos striker Alice Arnott, went unsold, highlighting the competitiveness of the auction.

Full List of Australian Players in the 2024 Women’s Hockey India League:

  • Jocelyn Bartram – NSW – Odisha Warriors – 15 lakhs (AUD 26,605)
  • Claire Colwill – QLD – Odisha Warriors – 13 lakhs (AUD 23,058)
  • Kaitlin Nobbs – NSW – Odisha Warriors – 13 lakhs (AUD 23,058)
  • Penny Squibb – WA – Soorma Hockey Club – 6.6 lakhs (AUD 11,706)
  • Miri Maroney – NSW – Delhi SG Pipers – 2 lakhs (AUD 3,547)

The auction has set the stage for an exciting season ahead, with international stars ready to compete in India’s revitalised league. For Australian players like Bartram, the tournament offers a chance to make their mark on the world stage, while adding to an already memorable year.

  • English Language Proficiency: An IELTS score of at least 6 (with a minimum of 5 in each section) or an equivalent.
  • Previous Participation: Applicants must not have participated in MATES before.

The MATES visa, available under the Temporary Work (International Relations) (Subclass 403) category, will allow 3,000 Indian nationals annually to work and gain valuable experience in Australia.

Unlike many other visa programs, there will be no requirement for employer sponsorship under the MATES scheme, making the process more accessible for young professionals. Additionally, participants can apply to bring dependents, who will also be granted work rights in Australia.

The MATES scheme serves as a significant component of the bilateral framework, which aims to address issues related to illegal and irregular migration while enhancing the ease of movement between India and Australia.

Streamlined Application Process

Applications for the MATES visa will be managed through a visa pre-application ballot process, which will ensure a fair and transparent selection method for the 3,000 available spots each year. The ballot will serve as an initial step before formal applications are made, providing a more efficient pathway for eligible applicants.

Successful applicants will be granted 12 months to make their first entry into Australia, followed by a 24-month stay, allowing for multiple entries. Those wishing to extend their stay beyond two years may apply for other temporary or permanent visas, provided they meet the eligibility requirements.

The launch of the MATES scheme is expected to further bolster the Australia-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, providing a new avenue for collaboration in education, industry, and innovation. It also supports India’s aspirations for expanding global career opportunities for its youth and addresses Australia’s demand for skilled professionals across key sectors.

The scheme will be open for applications starting in late 2024, and further details regarding the visa subclass, costs, and application processes will be released in the coming months.

India and Australia Hold 2+2 Secretary-Level Talks, Strengthening Defence and Diplomatic Ties https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/india-and-australia-hold-22-secretary-level-talks-strengthening-defence-and-diplomatic-ties/ Mon, 14 Oct 2024 23:31:16 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=72541 Australia and India strengthened their defence and diplomatic ties during 2+2 Secretary-level consultations held in New Delhi on Monday. The high-level dialogue was co-chaired by India’s Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, alongside Australian Defence Secretary Greg Moriarty and Secretary of Foreign Affairs Jan Adams.

The talks focused on consolidating the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) between the two nations, which has been a cornerstone of their collaboration since 2020. Both sides highlighted the importance of deepening cooperation, not only bilaterally but also within the broader Indo-Pacific region. This growing partnership is aimed at promoting a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific amidst an evolving regional security environment.

In a statement, the Indian Ministry of Defence emphasised that the consultations would further benefit the region by fostering mutual understanding and joint efforts in areas like defence cooperation, security partnerships, and strategic engagement.

High-Level Meetings

The Secretary-level talks were preceded by separate high-profile meetings between Australian and Indian officials. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Jan Adams, the Secretary of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, earlier in the day to discuss the ongoing CSP and future initiatives. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Jaishankar described the conversation as a vital step in reinforcing ties between the two nations.

“Pleased to receive Australian @dfat Secretary Jan Adams today in New Delhi. The exchanges and conversations between us befit our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” Jaishankar wrote.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also met with Greg Moriarty, the Australian Defence Secretary, expressing optimism about strengthening bilateral defence cooperation. Singh posted on X, saying, “Was pleased to meet the Australian Secretary for Department of Defence, Mr. Greg Moriarty in New Delhi. Looking forward to further strengthening India-Australia defence cooperation.”

Strategic Importance for the Indo-Pacific

The India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) was established in June 2020 and serves as a crucial framework for both countries to collaborate on a range of issues, from defence to regional stability. According to Philip Green, the Australian High Commissioner to India, the Secretary-level meeting adds another “important brick” to the ongoing security partnership, keeping momentum in between the annual 2+2 Ministerial meetings.

“Another important brick in our intensifying security partnership. The India-Australia Secretaries’ 2+2 meeting today – taking place in the years between our Ministerial 2+2 – ensures we continue to build momentum,” Green posted on X.

Australia is one of only three nations with whom India holds annual leader-level summits, underlining the strength of their bilateral relationship. Leaders from both countries interact regularly at major international platforms, including the Quad, G20, and East Asia Summit. Their shared vision for a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific is driving closer defence, security, and diplomatic cooperation.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during the ASEAN-India Summit in Laos, further solidifying ties between the two nations on the international stage.

The latest round of 2+2 Secretary-level consultations reaffirms the commitment of both nations to enhance strategic, defence, and diplomatic collaboration in a rapidly changing regional landscape.

Maritime Exercise Malabar 2024 to Begin in India with Australia, USA and Japan’ Participation https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/maritime-exercise-malabar-2024-to-begin-in-india-with-australia-usa-and-japan-participation/ Tue, 08 Oct 2024 01:15:37 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=72129 The highly anticipated Maritime Exercise Malabar 2024 is set to commence today on October 8 in the Indian coastal city of Visakhapatnam, with participation from the Quad nationsIndia, Australia, Japan, and the United States. The exercise aims to enhance interoperability, foster mutual understanding, and address shared maritime challenges in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific region.

The exercise will occur in two phases: the Harbour phase in Visakhapatnam and the Sea Phase, where complex maritime operations will be conducted.

The Harbour phase will feature key diplomatic and operational events, including a Distinguished Visitors’ Day on October 9, 2024, during which India’s Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, will host delegations from all four nations. A Joint Press Conference will also be held as part of the Harbour phase, co-chaired by the heads of delegations from the participating countries.

Exercise Malabar, which began as a bilateral naval drill between the United States and the Indian Navy in 1992, has evolved into a key multilateral event that underscores the growing strategic cooperation among the Quad nations. The exercise has expanded in scope and complexity over the years, now focusing on enhancing operational capabilities and situational awareness in the maritime domain, particularly in response to shared challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

Multilateral Naval Participation

This year’s exercise will feature a diverse array of naval platforms and personnel from all four participating nations:

  • India will deploy several naval assets, including guided missile destroyers, multi-purpose frigates, submarines, fixed-wing maritime reconnaissance (MR) aircraft, fighter jets, and helicopters.
  • Australia will send HMAS Stuart, an Anzac-Class Frigate equipped with an MH-60R helicopter and a P8 Maritime Patrol Aircraft.
  • The United States Navy will field the USS Dewey, an Arleigh Burke-Class Destroyer with an integral helicopter and P8 Maritime Patrol Aircraft.
  • Japan will participate with JS Ariake, a Murasame-Class Destroyer.

In addition, special forces from all four nations will also take part in the exercise, adding a critical element of joint operational capabilities.

Focus on Cooperation and Operational Expertise

Malabar 2024 will focus on a wide range of maritime operations, including anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, air defence exercises, and special operations. A Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE) will facilitate knowledge sharing on these key areas of expertise. The exercise will incorporate complex operational scenarios aimed at improving cooperation between the navies and enhancing situational awareness in maritime operations.

The Sea phase will feature intensive maritime exercises, with participants engaging in anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, and air defence drills. These activities will not only test the capabilities of the participating fleets but will also enhance the nation’s ability to work together in addressing potential maritime threats in the Indo-Pacific.

Strengthening Regional Security

As the Quad nations continue to emphasise the importance of free and open maritime navigation in the Indo-Pacific, Exercise Malabar 2024 comes at a time when regional security and maritime cooperation are of critical importance. The exercise is expected to be the most comprehensive in the series to date, with the inclusion of complex operational scenarios designed to strengthen the security architecture in the region.

By bringing together India, Australia, Japan, and the United States, Malabar 2024 showcases the commitment of these nations to maintaining stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region through enhanced maritime collaboration and mutual support.

As the exercise unfolds, all eyes will be on Visakhapatnam as the Quad nations come together to demonstrate their shared commitment to regional peace and cooperation.

Indian Youth, Apply for Australia’s Work and Holiday Visa Ballot for Only $25 Starting Today https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/indian-youth-apply-for-australias-work-and-holiday-visa-ballot-for-only-25-starting-today/ Tue, 01 Oct 2024 06:31:36 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=71627 Australia has today launched a new pre-application ballot process for the high-demand Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa, allowing young people from India, Vietnam and China a fair opportunity to apply for a working holiday in Australia.

With a registration fee of AUD 25, eligible individuals from these countries can now register for the ballot, which began today.

This initiative, which is part of the 2024-2025 program year, aims to ensure an equitable and transparent selection process for applicants from countries where demand exceeds the available visa spots.

Eligibility Criteria

The Work and Holiday visa ballots for India, Vietnam and China will be held annually, with each country having a specific registration period. This year’s registration period opened on October 1, 2024, and participants must complete the process within the specified timeframe to be eligible for selection.

To register for the ballot, Indian applicants must:

  • Age: Be between 18 and 30 years old (inclusive).
  • Nationality: Hold a valid Indian passport.
  • National ID: Have a valid PAN card.
  • Account: Create an ImmiAccount and verify their email address.
  • Fee: Pay the AUD 25 registration fee.

The Work and Holiday Maker arrangement is a key commitment under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), which aims to enhance people-to-people ties between the two nations. Eligible Indian passport holders now have the opportunity to apply for a working holiday in Australia via the pre-application ballot process.

Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted this development in a recent post on X: “Concluded a very productive visit to Australia which will further strengthen our bilateral trade and investment ties in several priority sectors and open new areas of cooperation.

“During the visit, happy to learn that Work & Holiday visa, a key commitment under India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement will be operational from 1st October 2024 which will facilitate mobility and deepen people-to-people connect 🇮🇳 🇦🇺.”

Ballot Process

The ballot registration is completed via ImmiAccount, under ‘New application’. Once the form is filled and the registration fee is paid, the status changes from ‘draft’ to ‘received’, and the applicant is added to the ballot for random selection.

The ballot process aims to provide a fair and efficient way of managing the high demand for Work and Holiday visas. The selection is conducted through a random automated process, ensuring that every eligible applicant has an equal chance of being selected. Those selected will receive a ‘Notification of selection’ letter via email, inviting them to apply for the Work and Holiday visa.

However, it is important to note that receiving a selection letter does not guarantee the visa. Applicants must still meet all eligibility requirements to be granted a Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa.

Once selected, participants will have their registration status updated to ‘selected’ in their ImmiAccount and will be invited to apply for the visa. The notification letter will provide further instructions, and some details will be pre-filled in the application form for convenience.

With registrations now open, eligible Indian applicants are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to participate in the Work and Holiday visa program and experience the culture and lifestyle that Australia has to offer.

Pakistani National Khizar Hayat pleads guilty to desecrating Gutka Sahib, and posting video to TikTok https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/pakistani-national-khizar-hayat-pleads-guilty-to-desecrating-gutka-sahib-and-posting-video-to-tiktok/ Mon, 30 Sep 2024 08:50:34 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=71561 A 21-year-old Pakistani national, identified as Khizar Hayat has pleaded guilty in Perth Court to a reprehensible act of desecration against the Gutka Sahib, a sacred Sikh text, filming himself in the act and uploading the footage to TikTok.

The incident that has sent shock waves throughout the Sikh community in Australia occurred at the Canning Vale Sikh Temple in Western Australia’s capital Perth on August 29, 2024. It sparked widespread condemnation, protests, and calls for stricter legal actions, not only from the Sikh community but also from other religious and cultural groups across Australia.

More than 50 members of the Sikh community gathered at the Armadale Magistrates Court to witness Khizar Hayat plead guilty to one count of intending to racially harass. Although the community welcomed his guilty plea, there is widespread concern that Hayat may face only a fine as a penalty, a consequence viewed as grossly inadequate given the gravity of the crime.

Hayat has been granted strict bail on a $10,000 personal undertaking, which includes a ban from using social media, a requirement to report to police daily, and an enforced curfew from 6 pm to 6 am. He is also restricted from leaving Australia.

His sentencing will take place next month, but Sikh community leaders have expressed a deep fear that the legal response so far is not sufficient to serve as a deterrent for future acts of sacrilege.

The desecration, which took place in front of the Canning Vale Gurudwara, saw Hayat throw the Gutka Sahib—a revered scripture for Sikhs—onto the ground, step on it, tear its pages, flush parts down a toilet, and ultimately set portions of it on fire.

The videos, shared on TikTok, quickly went viral, leading to international outrage and deep emotional pain within the Sikh community.

Hayat’s actions have been described as an attack on the core of Sikh spirituality. The Gutka Sahib, also known as Pothi Sahib, is not just a religious book but is considered a living Guru for Sikhs.

As part of the Guru Granth Sahib, its teachings and presence guide the spiritual lives of Sikhs worldwide. For a community that has been integral to the social fabric of Australia for years, the incident represents the first of its kind in the nation’s history, resulting in significant devastation, heartbreak, and anger.

The Sikh Council of Western Australia and Hindu Council of Australia, were among the first to condemn the act, labelling it “Un-Australian.”

In a joint statement, the organisations emphasised that such actions undermine the principles of religious harmony and respect for cultural diversity that Australia is known for.

Community leaders echoed this sentiment, calling for measures to build peace and social cohesion in all religious communities. They stated that this kind of sacrilegious behaviour is a direct attack on the values that uphold Australia’s multicultural and inclusive identity.

The community has rallied together across the nation to respond to the incident, with meetings, ROS Marches (Mourning Marches), and awareness rallies being organised. Their demands are clear: they are calling upon the Australian Government, law enforcement authorities, and lawmakers to treat this issue with the seriousness it deserves. There are also requests for a full public inquiry into the incident.

The Sikh community’s desire to see Hayat face harsher penalties, ideally through charges that could be moved to the District Court, where more severe punishments could be issued. There are also calls for Hayat to be deported as he is not an Australian citizen.

As part of their campaign, Indian Australian community leaders have called for amendments to the Racial Vilification Act to cover incidents like the desecration of sacred texts more comprehensively. This amendment would enable stricter penalties for those found guilty of religious hatred and sacrilege. The community has also expressed interest in seeing the Australian Government implement specific laws aimed at preventing offences against sacred religious texts, not just for Sikhs, but for all faiths represented in Australia.

Despite the intense grief and anger, the Indian Australian community is calling for unity and urging the Australian government to take effective measures to prevent such sacrilegious acts in the future. They have stressed that this is not merely a religious issue but a matter that affects the very foundation of Australia’s multicultural values.

As Hayat’s sentencing approaches, the world will be watching to see how Australia responds to this call for justice, hoping that the nation’s commitment to multiculturalism and respect for all faiths will prevail.

This Diwali, Badam Barfi Gets an Aussie Twist: Australian Almonds Hit Indian Market https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/this-diwali-badam-barfi-gets-an-aussie-twist-australian-almonds-hit-indian-market/ Wed, 25 Sep 2024 03:12:21 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=71048 The highly anticipated new season of Australian almonds has officially been launched in India, marking a significant moment in the ongoing bilateral trade relations between the two nations. With the festive season approaching, these premium almonds are set to be a key part of Indian celebrations, including Diwali.

Australian almonds are known globally for their distinct sweet taste and crunchy texture, a result of optimal growing conditions in Australia’s almond-producing regions. As one of the largest importers of almonds globally, India is set to benefit from increased availability and enhanced trade channels with Australia, providing a boost to both economies.

Official Launch and Strengthening Trade Relations

Australia’s Deputy High Commissioner to India Nick McCaffery, formally launched the promotion campaign for Australian almonds at a reception at the Australian High Commission in New Delhi.

Speaking at the event, McCaffery emphasised the strategic partnership between Australia and India, which has seen significant growth since the implementation of the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA).

“Australia and India are strategic partners, and the two countries are working closely to enhance bilateral trade.

Australia’s almonds, recognised for their freshness and sweetness, perfectly complement the Indian market during the festive period of Diwali,”

McCaffery remarked.

He also highlighted the benefits of the counter-seasonality between the two hemispheres, which ensures year-round availability of fresh almonds in India.

Almond Board of Australia’s Commitment

Tim Jackson, CEO of the Almond Board of Australia (ABA), attended the event and emphasised the strict quality control and sustainable farming practices that distinguish Australian almonds in the global market.

“Australian almonds are known across the world for their high quality and exceptional taste, owing to strict quality controls and sustainable farming practices.”

“Their rich, buttery flavour makes them a versatile ingredient in a range of culinary applications, from traditional Indian sweets to modern recipes,” Jackson added.

With the increasing popularity of Australian almonds in India, Jackson encouraged consumers to seek out these premium almonds through local retailers and online platforms.

A Growing Market for Australian Almonds

The launch comes at a time when Australian almonds are gaining significant traction in the Indian market. As part of its ongoing efforts, the Almond Board of Australia is working to expand its presence and increase demand in India, a key market for almond exports.

Founded in 1995, the ABA has played a crucial role in the development and sustainability of the Australian almond industry. Through research, market development, and addressing key challenges like pest management and yield improvement, the ABA continues to support the growth of domestic and export markets.

Impact on Bilateral Trade

The growing trade in almonds between India and Australia underscores the strengthening economic ties between the two nations. The India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement has already facilitated tariff-free exports of Australian almonds to India, further cementing the importance of agricultural exports in their bilateral relationship.

As the festive season draws near, the availability of premium Australian almonds is expected to enrich the celebrations for millions of Indian consumers, while simultaneously bolstering the trade partnership between the two countries.

With increased availability and stronger trade channels, Australian almonds are poised to be a key part of India’s festive season, reflecting the deepening ties between these two strategic partners.

Australia on Track to Be First Country to Eliminate Cervical Cancer, Says PM Albanese https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/australia-on-track-to-be-first-country-to-eliminate-cervical-cancer-says-pm-albanese/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 04:42:01 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=70956 In a groundbreaking announcement, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed that Australia is on track to become the first nation in the world to eliminate cervical cancer. Speaking at the Quad Leaders’ Cancer Moonshot event on Saturday in Wilmington, Delaware, Albanese reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to eradicating the disease, both domestically and within the Indo-Pacific region.

“Australia is on track to be the first country in the world to eliminate cervical cancer. Today, I can announce that Australia is expanding our funding commitment to the elimination partnership in the Indo-Pacific for cervical cancer,” Albanese declared, signalling a significant step in the global fight against this preventable cancer.

Elimination Efforts and Quad Partnership

The announcement builds upon Australia’s comprehensive efforts to address cervical cancer, which have made significant progress over the years. Cervical cancer, caused primarily by the human papillomavirus (HPV), is a preventable disease. Australia’s public health measures, including nationwide HPV vaccinations and regular cervical screenings, have been pivotal in significantly reducing the incidence of the disease.

At the event, Albanese reflected on the Quad Leaders’ commitment to global health initiatives, recalling the first Quad Leaders summit chaired by U.S. President Joe Biden. At the time, the leaders agreed to collaborate on improving access to COVID-19 vaccines, resulting in more than 400 million vaccine doses being distributed to Indo-Pacific communities.

“The Quad Cancer Moonshot initiative builds on that spirit of cooperation. We are proud to stand with the United States, India, and Japan in this shared effort to change lives for the better,” Albanese stated, highlighting the significance of the partnership.

The Cancer Moonshot Initiative

The Cancer Moonshot is a major White House initiative launched by President Biden to accelerate cancer research, improve collaboration between global institutions, and drive significant progress in cancer prevention, treatment, and care. The initiative draws upon the resources of the public and private sectors, patient advocacy groups, healthcare providers, and research institutions to combat cancer globally.

As part of this initiative, over 95 new programs and policies have been introduced, and more than 170 private companies, nonprofits, and academic institutions have launched new collaborations to further the effort. The Cancer Moonshot is a comprehensive approach designed to reduce cancer mortality, and Australia’s efforts to eliminate cervical cancer are a key component of this global fight.

Australia’s Success in Cervical Cancer Prevention

Australia’s success in preventing cervical cancer is largely attributed to its national HPV vaccination program, which began in 2007 and offers free vaccines to both girls and boys in schools. The program has achieved high vaccination rates, significantly reducing the number of HPV infections, which are the leading cause of cervical cancer. Additionally, Australia’s National Cervical Screening Program, which uses advanced HPV testing, has further bolstered the country’s ability to detect and treat pre-cancerous conditions early.

In a statement, Albanese emphasized that Australia’s progress is not only a victory for the nation but a beacon of hope for the Indo-Pacific region. “Through our partnership with the Cancer Moonshot initiative and the expansion of our efforts in the Indo-Pacific, we are showing the world that eliminating cervical cancer is possible,” he said.

Looking Ahead

The expanded partnership and funding commitment in the Indo-Pacific region align with Australia’s broader goals of strengthening its health and economic ties within the region. With cervical cancer elimination within reach, Australia is positioning itself as a leader in public health, offering a model for other nations to follow.

As part of his visit to the Quad Leaders’ Cancer Moonshot event, Albanese also participated in discussions with U.S. President Joe Biden, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, reinforcing the collaborative nature of the initiative and underscoring the importance of global partnerships in addressing major health challenges.

Australia’s path to eliminating cervical cancer could redefine global public health efforts, demonstrating the power of prevention, early detection, and international cooperation.

Centrex enters into India market with first Phosphate shipment from Queensland’ Ardmore Mine https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/centrex-enters-into-india-market-with-first-phosphate-shipment-from-queensland-ardmore-mine/ Sat, 21 Sep 2024 01:55:49 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=70696 In a major milestone for Australia’s mining and export industries, Centrex Limited (ASX: CXM) is set to dispatch its first-ever shipment of high-grade rock phosphate from the Ardmore mine in Queensland to India.

This shipment, scheduled for late September 2024, will mark Australia’s first phosphate export to India and signals Centrex’s growing global competitiveness in the rock phosphate market.

The Ardmore mine, owned by Centrex’s subsidiary Agriflex Pty Ltd, is one of the few remaining undeveloped, high-quality phosphate rock deposits globally. With approximately 25,000 tonnes of phosphate concentrate ready to be shipped, Centrex is positioning itself as a significant player in the growing international demand for phosphate, which is a key ingredient in fertilizers.

Centrex’s Entry into the Indian Market

India, the largest importer of phosphate rock globally, brings in nearly 10 million tonnes annually. The country’s heavy reliance on these imports offers a significant opportunity for Centrex to secure a strong foothold in this critical market.

Chief Executive Officer Robert Mencel said that this shipment represents an important strategic move for Centrex.

“For many in northern Australia, it’s been a long-held dream that the immense phosphate endowment of the Georgina Basin could one day help feed Asia’s burgeoning economic and population growth.

Centrex’s first shipment of high-grade, low-impurity phosphate concentrate into this strategic market is beginning to turn this dream into reality.”

Mencel added that the company looks forward to deepening its relationship with India and expanding into other key Asian markets as Ardmore’s production capacity continues to grow.

Samsung C&T Corporation’s Role

The transaction will be managed by Samsung C&T Corporation under a marketing services agreement with Centrex. This deal highlights the international collaboration between Australia, South Korea, and India, further enhancing Centrex’s presence on the global stage. Samsung C&T will conduct and facilitate the shipment, ensuring a smooth transition into the Indian market.

The Impact of ECTA on the Trade

The shipment has been made possible, in part, by the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), which facilitates tariff-free exports of Australian goods to India. This agreement aligns with the Australian Federal Government’s India Economic Strategy, designed to strengthen trade relations between the two nations. Mencel emphasized that the ECTA has been instrumental in making Centrex’s entry into the Indian market a reality, calling it a “strategic alignment with government policy.”

Ardmore’s Growth and Future Potential

The Ardmore phosphate mine has been steadily increasing production capacity, enabling larger shipments over time. This first shipment to India is part of the mine’s ongoing Stage 1.5 expansion, which has progressively enhanced its ability to meet international demand. Centrex’s recent acquisition of a new exploration permit, approximately 70 kilometers from Ardmore, promises further growth potential. This permit is strategically located near Incitec Pivot’s Phosphate Hill mine and positions Centrex to explore additional opportunities in the region.

The Road Ahead

With this landmark shipment, Centrex is not only tapping into India’s substantial demand for phosphate rock but also establishing itself as a key supplier to one of the world’s fastest-growing markets. The company is optimistic about future growth, with plans to strengthen its presence in India and other Asian markets. This export opens new avenues for Australian mining products, demonstrating the potential for further collaboration between Australia, India, and other international partners.

Centrex’s journey from the untapped resources of the Georgina Basin to becoming a global phosphate supplier is just beginning. The company’s ongoing efforts in expanding the Ardmore mine and forging new partnerships will likely make it a significant player in the global phosphate market in the years to come.

She further highlighted the power of film as a medium that transcends boundaries, bringing people together and fostering understanding between cultures. She also revealed a light-hearted personal ambition, saying,

“I dream of being the first Victorian Premier to appear in a Bollywood film!”

This remark was met with laughter and applause from the audience, underscoring her genuine enthusiasm for India’s vibrant film industry.

Cultural Exchange Through Film

My Melbourne is a unique project, born out of a collaboration between IFFM and the Victorian Government, and is set to tell compelling stories about Melbourne’s diverse communities. The anthology film is composed of four short stories, each reflecting the experiences of migrants in Melbourne.

Directed by four of Bollywood’s most celebrated filmmakers—Imtiaz Ali, known for Jab We Met and Tamasha; Kabir Khan, director of Bajrangi Bhaijaan; and Onir, famous for his socially conscious films like My Brother…Nikhil—the film explores themes such as race, identity, and the challenges faced by people from different cultural backgrounds in a foreign land.

Onir, who directed one of the most touching and a story of inclusivity, shared his excitement about the project: “It’s a rare opportunity to tell stories that resonate globally, and Melbourne is the perfect backdrop to explore these universal themes of belonging and identity.”

Imtiaz Ali echoed these sentiments, stating that “Melbourne’s cultural landscape is rich, and the stories here are waiting to be told. I am thrilled to be a part of this journey.”

Building on Victoria’s India Strategy

The film’s special screening is just one of many engagements that Premier Allan is participating in during her visit to India, which focuses on strengthening ties between Victoria and India across multiple sectors. Film, in particular, is a key focus of the visit, given Melbourne’s growing reputation as a global hub for arts, film, and culture. The state of Victoria is home to a large Indian community, making collaborations like My Melbourne not only culturally relevant but also a celebration of shared values between the two regions.

At the event, Premier Allan emphasised the role of Victoria as a global leader in film production and cultural initiatives.

“Victoria is a state where arts and culture thrive.

We are home to a vibrant Indian community, and the stories they bring enrich the cultural fabric of Melbourne. Through this film, we aim to highlight our shared values and strengthen the bonds between our two nations,”

she said.

This focus on cultural diplomacy is aligned with Victoria’s broader India Strategy, which aims to enhance ties between the two regions across various domains including education, tourism, and trade. During her visit, Allan is also expected to release a comprehensive India Strategy report, outlining the state’s plans to boost trade and collaboration in fields such as advanced manufacturing, technology, and education.

Victoria’s Growing Influence in the Indian Film Industry

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne has long been a cultural bridge between India and Australia. Each year, it showcases the best of Indian cinema to Australian audiences, fostering cultural exchange through film. Premier Allan’s participation in the inauguration of My Melbourne further cements Victoria’s place as a key player in the global film industry.

Mitu Bhowmick Lange, Director of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, expressed her excitement about the project: “This film is a celebration of the diversity that Melbourne is known for. We are thrilled to have these incredible directors onboard, and we hope this project will inspire more collaborations between India and Australia in the future.”

A Strong Foundation for Future Collaborations

Premier Allan’s visit to India, which focuses on deepening ties in tourism, technology, and education, has been a significant diplomatic milestone. The film inauguration serves as a reminder of the power of cultural exchange in strengthening international relations. By fostering collaborations in the creative industries, Victoria continues to position itself as a leading cultural hub on the global stage.

As Allan’s trip progresses, it is clear that both Victoria and India stand to benefit from this cultural diplomacy. The special screening of My Melbourne is just the beginning of a series of initiatives that will undoubtedly strengthen the bonds between these two regions for years to come.

In her closing remarks, Premier Allan shared her hopes for the future of Victoria-India relations: “As we continue to deepen our ties, I look forward to more collaborations that celebrate our shared values and build a future where Victoria and India grow together—both culturally and economically.”

Her inauguration of My Melbourne is a fitting representation of this future, where art, culture, and community come together to tell stories that transcend borders.

Mumbai to Melbourne: Pro Kabaddi League Event to be Hosted in Victoria, Announces Premier Allan https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/mumbai-to-melbourne-pro-kabaddi-league-event-to-be-hosted-in-victoria-announces-premier-allan/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 06:16:34 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=70388 In an Australian first, Premier Jacinta Allan has announced a historic collaboration between the Victorian Government and the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) to explore bringing a PKL showcase event to Melbourne within the next 18 months.

This partnership marks an exciting addition to Victoria’s growing list of major events and is poised to strengthen cultural ties between India and Australia.

The announcement was made in New Delhi, where Premier Allan met with key figures from the PKL, including Sanjog Gupta, Head of Sports at Disney Star, and Anupam Goswami, League Commissioner of PKL.

The move will give Melbourne the opportunity to host a sport that has captivated millions in India, being second only to cricket in popularity.

The Premier stated,

“As the sporting capital of Australia, we’re proud to be partnering with the Pro Kabaddi League to explore bringing a PKL Showcase in Melbourne, with the sport attracting one of the fastest growing fan bases around the globe.”

Kabaddi is a high-octane, contact sport that requires strategy, agility, and teamwork. The PKL, since its inception in 2014, has seen immense growth, drawing nearly 300 million viewers annually in India. Bringing this sport to Melbourne is expected to excite the city’s large Indian population and promote deeper cultural exchange.

Victoria is home to the largest Indian population in Australia, making it a natural destination for such an event.

Steve Dimopoulos, Victoria’s Minister for Tourism, Sport, and Major Events, emphasised the significance of this partnership in celebrating diversity, stating,

“Working with the PKL is part of the state’s commitment to celebrate and support multicultural communities.”

Visit Victoria CEO Brendan McClements expressed excitement, saying the partnership with PKL will strengthen the state’s growing relationship with the Indian visitor economy, which generated $452 million in revenue from nearly 180,000 Indian visitors in the year ending March 2024.

This collaboration is part of the broader “India Strategy” by the Victorian Government, aimed at enhancing cultural and economic ties with India, a key overseas market for the state.

With Victoria’s reputation as a global sports hub, the potential Kabaddi showcase is expected to attract both local and international fans, further solidifying Melbourne’s position on the world stage for major sporting events.

Premier Jacinta Allan Launches $5M Fund to Boost Victoria-India Education Ties on First Day of India Visit https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/premier-jacinta-allan-launches-5m-fund-to-boost-victoria-india-education-ties-on-first-day-of-india-visit/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 04:55:50 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=70341 Victoria’s Premier Jacinta Allan began her five-day visit to India with a series of significant announcements aimed at enhancing the state’s educational ties with India.

On her first day in New Delhi, Premier Allan unveiled the new $5 million Yes to International Students Fund, designed to help Victorian universities and TAFEs expand their transnational education (TNE) offerings. This initiative will facilitate partnerships with Indian institutions, such as the newly expanded collaboration between RMIT University and India’s BITS Pilani, announced during her visit.

The Yes to International Students Fund will provide seed funding to Victorian universities and TAFEs, enabling them to establish offshore campuses or co-deliver dual degree programs in partnership with international universities. This effort aligns with Victoria’s goal of expanding its global education footprint while helping local institutions tap into the growing demand for Australian education overseas.

Premier Allan highlighted the importance of international students to Victoria’s economy and cultural diversity.

“We say yes to international students because they boost our economy and our global reputation, support our small businesses, and keep our multicultural state connected with the world,”

Allan said at the event in Delhi.

The Premier also took a strong stance against the Australian Federal Government’s cap on international students, adding,

“We say no to the Federal Government’s caps. Our new fund is going to help our unis and TAFEs find innovative ways to challenge them.”

Strengthening Victoria-India Educational Ties

The RMIT-BITS Pilani partnership was spotlighted as one of the success stories of transnational education. The dual degree program allows students to complete half of their undergraduate degree in India and the other half in Victoria, a model Allan believes is essential for the future of international education.

“Victoria will continue to be Australia’s number one destination for students, and partnerships like this one will only help strengthen our educational ties with India,”

she noted.

TAFEs in Victoria have also demonstrated success in offshore education. Premier Allan cited Holmesglen TAFE’s achievements, including its operations in Mongolia and Qatar, as examples of how Victorian institutions are expanding globally.

Economic and Cultural Engagements on Day One

The Premier’s visit is not only focused on education but also aims to deepen trade, investment, and cultural ties between Victoria and India.

During her visit to New Delhi, Allan addressed the Australia India Institute’s Annual Oration, emphasising the importance of the Victoria-India relationship.

“We are here to celebrate our connection between India and Victoria, a connection that we know is deep and profound… I am proud that Indians are choosing Melbourne and Victoria as their home,”

Premier Allan said.

She also highlighted the contributions of Indian-born Australians, stating,

“Today, Victoria’s trade relationship with India is worth $3.6 billion – it’s a big and important part of our economy.”

During her address, Allan praised India as “the future of the world,” underscoring Victoria’s commitment to furthering partnerships across sectors like education, technology, and culture.

“India is a developing economy that can only be described as an exciting one… and Victoria will continue to partner because Victoria is the future of Australia,”

she added.

Exploring Delhi’s Rich History

In addition to the formal engagements, Premier Allan toured Delhi’s historic Qutb Minar and Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque, guided by cultural heritage expert Dr. Navina Jafa.

This visit highlighted the rich history of India’s Islamic and Hindu heritage and marked a cultural milestone in the Premier’s itinerary. During her tour, Allan was also approached by a young boy, Sunny Sharma, who expressed his desire to improve his English skills.

Premier Allan praised him and encouraged his ambition, even inviting him to visit Melbourne someday.

Looking Ahead: A Week of Strategic Engagements

Premier Jacinta Allan’s first day in India has set a strong tone for the rest of her visit, which is expected to focus on expanding Victoria’s partnerships in education, technology, and trade.

The trip includes meetings with Indian business leaders, educational institutions, and government officials to further develop the Victoria-India relationship. Allan will also continue to emphasise Victoria as a prime destination for international students and highlight the state’s multicultural vibrancy.

As part of her agenda, Allan will visit several holy and cultural sites across India, further strengthening cultural ties and enhancing people-to-people connections between Victoria and India. This trip marks an important step in reinforcing Victoria’s global partnerships, with education serving as the cornerstone of Allan’s mission to bring new opportunities and mutual growth to both Victoria and India.

This trip will be her first official international visit since taking office and is poised to strengthen ties between Victoria and India across key sectors including tourism, technology, film, and education.

The visit underscores the growing relationship between the two regions and Victoria’s commitment to fostering deeper collaboration with one of its most important partners.

Pre-Visit Discussions with Indian-Australian Leaders

Ahead of the visit, Premier Allan and Multicultural Minister Ingrid Stitt hosted an important discussion with prominent Indian-Australian community leaders at the Parliament of Victoria.

It was an opportunity for Indian Australians to raise concerns and discuss pressing issues within their community.

During the meeting, participants addressed a range of topics that reflect the challenges faced by Indian Australians.

Key issues included the need for more support for domestic violence awareness within Indian families, improved healthcare solutions for multicultural communities, and the significant impact of cuts to international student numbers.

Additionally, attendees lightened the conversation by inquiring about Premier Allan’s preferences for Indian cuisine ahead of her visit to the Indian capital, New Delhi.

Premier Allan listened attentively to the concerns raised and reassured the community leaders that their voices would be heard and considered in future policy discussions.

“It’s important that we continue to consult and work closely with all communities in Victoria to ensure that we’re addressing the real issues they face, from healthcare to education,” Premier Allan said during the meeting.

“The Indian community is a vibrant and integral part of Victoria, and I am committed to ensuring that their needs are met with practical solutions.”

Focus on Key Sectors: Tourism, Technology, Film, and Education

In an exclusive interview with The Australia Today, Premier Allan provided a sneak peek into the agenda of her India visit. She emphasised that the focus will be on sectors critical to both Victoria and India, including tourism, technology, films, and education.

“India and Victoria share a strong and evolving relationship, particularly in sectors like tech and education where both regions are innovators,”

Premier Allan said.

“My visit will highlight these areas, and we are excited to build on the progress we’ve already made. From film collaborations to expanding tourism opportunities, we will be engaging with leaders in these industries to further strengthen our ties.”

Additionally, the Premier is expected to participate in the release of a comprehensive India Strategy report, which will lay out Victoria’s plans for enhancing trade and collaboration with India. The report will focus on key areas such as education, agriculture, advanced manufacturing, med-tech, and biotech.

Premier Allan remarked, “This strategy is more than just trade; it’s about building people-to-people relationships and enhancing the lives of those in both Victoria and India.

“We’re looking forward to creating new opportunities and opening up dialogues that will benefit both economies.”

Key Highlights of the India Visit

The visit will include several high-level meetings with Indian government officials, business leaders, and educational institutions, aiming to facilitate stronger economic and cultural exchanges between Victoria and India.

A highlight of the visit will be Premier Allan’s attendance at the Australia India Institute’s Annual Oration, where she is expected to deliver a keynote speech in New Delhi, underscoring the importance of Victoria’s relationship with India and outlining future opportunities for collaboration.

Premier Allan will also participate in the opening of the University of Melbourne’s Global Centre in Delhi, further cementing the educational ties between the two regions. The Centre is expected to serve as a key hub for academic and research exchanges between Indian and Australian students and faculty.

In addition to these formal engagements, the Premier is also expected to visit several cultural and historical sites in India, meeting with key stakeholders in the Indian film industry as part of her efforts to foster deeper collaboration in media and entertainment.

There will be a screening of the “My Melbourne’ movie produced by the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne with three renowned film directors of Bollywood.

Support for International Students and Community Engagement

One of the critical issues raised by Indian Australians in the pre-visit discussions was the challenges faced by international students, who have been significantly impacted by rising living costs and cuts to student services. Premier Allan addressed these concerns, assuring the community that her government remains committed to supporting international students, particularly those from India who make up a large portion of Victoria’s student population.

“Victoria is home to thousands of international students, and we recognise the contributions they make to our state both economically and culturally,” Allan said.

“We will continue to work towards ensuring that international students are supported during their time here, with access to essential services and resources.”

Her trip to India is expected to provide a platform for discussing these concerns with Indian leaders and exploring ways to enhance support for students studying abroad in Victoria.

A Promising Future for Victoria-India Relations

Premier Jacinta Allan’s upcoming visit to India represents a significant step in deepening the economic and cultural ties between the two regions. With a focus on sectors such as education, technology, tourism, and films, the visit promises to open new doors for collaboration and mutual growth.

As the Premier engages with Indian leaders and industry professionals, the foundations will be laid for a future where Victoria and India work closely to tackle shared challenges and build prosperous, interconnected communities.

“We are excited about the future of our relationship with India,” Premier Allan stated.

“This visit is just the beginning of what we hope will be many fruitful collaborations in the years to come.”

With a packed agenda and high expectations from both sides, Premier Jacinta Allan’s visit is poised to be a pivotal moment in the ever-strengthening ties between Victoria and India.

QUAD Talks: Modi and Albanese Discuss Cooperation and Bilateral Relations in Strategic Phone Call https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/quad-talks-modi-and-albanese-discuss-cooperation-and-bilateral-relations-in-strategic-phone-call/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 01:40:26 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=68710 To further bolster ties between Australia and India, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese held a conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The discussion focused on taking stock of the ongoing progress in bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in various multilateral forums, including the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad).

Deepening Bilateral Relations

The conversation between the two leaders highlights the growing partnership between India and Australia, which has seen considerable advancement in recent years. Both nations have been working closely on various fronts, including trade, security, education, and regional stability.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi expressed his satisfaction with the discussion, stating, “Delighted to speak to my friend Anthony Albanese. We took stock of progress in our bilateral relations and cooperation in the multilateral fora, including the Quad.”

This statement underscores the mutual respect and shared vision that both leaders have for the future of India-Australia relations.

Australia and India have been steadily strengthening their ties, with an emphasis on enhancing economic cooperation and addressing shared security concerns. The relationship has been particularly important given the strategic significance of the Indo-Pacific region, where both nations play crucial roles.

PM Albanese has responded on X (formerly Twitter) saying,

“Great to speak to you yesterday @narendramodi, to wish you Happy Krishna Janmashtami, and to talk about all the work Australia and India are doing as partners bilaterally and regionally, including through the Quad.”

Focus on Quad and Regional Security

The Quad, comprising India, Australia, the United States, and Japan, has been a focal point of the discussions between PM Modi and PM Albanese. The dialogue underlines the commitment of both nations to work together with their Quad partners to ensure a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.

The Quad has gained prominence as a key platform for addressing regional security challenges, particularly in light of increasing tensions in the Indo-Pacific. The member countries have been collaborating on various initiatives, including maritime security, cyber security, and infrastructure development, all of which are critical to maintaining stability in the region.

Engagement on Multiple Fronts

The conversation between the two prime ministers comes on the heels of a meeting between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, which took place on July 29 in Tokyo.

During their meeting, Jaishankar and Wong discussed further intensifying bilateral ties, with a particular focus on security, trade, and education.

Jaishankar, in a post on X, mentioned, “A great start this morning meeting Australian FM Penny Wong in Tokyo. Spoke about further steps to intensify our bilateral ties including in security, trade, and education. Also discussed deepening our practical cooperation across the Indo-Pacific.”

The reference to the Indo-Pacific highlights the shared interest of both nations in ensuring a stable and secure region.

Minster Wong echoed these sentiments, emphasising Australia’s commitment to deepening ties with India and enhancing cooperation across the Indo-Pacific. She also announced Australia’s launch of a new Cable Connectivity and Resilience Centre aimed at strengthening undersea cable networks in the Indo-Pacific, a crucial infrastructure for global communication and economic growth.

Australia’s Investment in Indo-Pacific Resilience

The new Cable Connectivity and Resilience Centre, announced by Foreign Minister Penny Wong, is set to play a pivotal role in ensuring that undersea cable networks in the Indo-Pacific remain resilient and secure. These cables carry over 95% of international data traffic, making them essential to the functioning of the global economy.

In a statement from her office, Wong noted the strategic importance of these networks, saying,

“We rely on a vast network of undersea cables, which carry over 95 per cent of international data traffic from emails to e-commerce, accessing news, social media, and streaming content.”

Australia’s investment of more than USD 18 million over the next four years in this Centre underscores the nation’s commitment to the security and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region. The Centre will draw on the region’s extensive expertise in undersea telecommunications cables to ensure reliable connectivity, which is integral to the growth of the digital economy.

The ongoing engagement between India and Australia is a testament to the strong and evolving partnership between the two countries. The discussions between PM Modi and PM Albanese, along with the initiatives announced by Foreign Minister Wong, reflect the shared vision of both nations to collaborate on key regional and global issues.

As the world navigates complex geopolitical challenges, the partnership between India and Australia is likely to play an increasingly significant role in shaping the future of the Indo-Pacific region. The continued dialogue and cooperation between the two nations signal a robust commitment to a stable, secure, and prosperous region.

With both countries committed to furthering their bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in multilateral forums, the future of India-Australia ties looks promising.

Albanese Government Shuts Down Over 150 ‘Ghost Colleges’ in Major VET Sector Crackdown https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/albanese-government-shuts-down-over-150-ghost-colleges-in-major-vet-sector-crackdown/ Wed, 21 Aug 2024 03:27:25 +0000 https://www.theaustraliatoday.com.au/?p=68070 The Federal Government has announced a significant crackdown on dormant vocational education and training (VET) providers, shutting down over 150 “ghost colleges” as part of an effort to restore integrity in Australia’s VET sector.

This action follows the findings of the Braithwaite Review (2018), the Nixon Review (2023), and the Interim Report into International Education (2023), which highlighted severe integrity issues that were ignored under the previous Liberal and National Governments.

Minister for Skills and Training, Andrew Giles, emphasised that the government’s action is aimed at eliminating rorts and loopholes that have plagued the VET sector for too long.

He stated, “The Albanese Government is calling time on the rorts and loopholes that have plagued the VET sector for far too long under the former Liberal and National Government.”

“We’ve weeded out and shut down over 150 dormant operators, and 140 more have been given a yellow card.”

The government has also put an additional 140 registered training organizations (RTOs) on notice, requiring them to resume quality training by the end of 2024 or face deregistration.

The initiative is part of broader efforts by the Albanese Government to restore the integrity and quality of the VET sector, backed by more than $37 million in investments in VET integrity initiatives.

The National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Amendment, passed earlier this year, has strengthened measures to improve the quality of education in Australia.

These actions are designed to ensure students receive training from reputable providers and that businesses can trust the qualifications being awarded, ultimately saving time and money in the hiring process and preventing student exploitation.

Minister Giles further added,

“Under our Government, there is no place for anyone who seeks to undermine the sector and exploit students.”

He says this decisive action demonstrates the government’s commitment to cleaning up a sector that has been marred by issues for over a decade, ensuring that Australia’s VET system remains robust, trustworthy, and effective in delivering quality education to students.
